Overview About this Role:The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory within the College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking applicants for a Research Assistant. This position exists to process diagnostic specimens and utilize selective media preparations to enhance the isolation and identification of pathogenic bacteria and to conduct antibacterial sensitivity testing. This employee will assist the laboratory supervisor and other collect faculty in ongoing research projects by isolating and selecting pure colonies of bacteria for identification and pathogenicity studies and refer to reference laboratories where appropriate. The university actively seeks candidates whose commitments and contributions--will advance the University's commitment to the--Principles of Community.--Duties / Responsibilities: Perform daily tasks in the Bacteriology lab utilizing standard operating procedures and quality control protocols. This includes determining whether specimens received were properly collected and appropriate for the type of examination requested. Using the unique accession number to identify specimens and derived isolates on the report sheet. Entering pertinent case data into daily case log, report sheet and into computer systems. Selecting culture media appropriate for the types of pathogens that might be present in the specimen, properly inoculating and incubating media in the recommended environmental conditions. Following appropriate incubation time, primary culture media is examined for the presence of colonies of potential pathogens and appropriate morphological, biochemical, serological, or other techniques are used to identify the genus and species of the organism. Pathogens needing susceptibilities are identified. Knowledge of special culture techniques for the following tasks in the laboratory: performing fungal culture, isolation and identification of anaerobic bacteria; isolation and identification of Listeria, Campylobacter, Brucella and Mycoplasma organisms; and Clostridium difficile toxin ELISA and latex agglutination for E. coli K00. They must be able to interpret this information and analyze the results to report these results to our clients. Perform data entry into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to communicate the findings from the laboratory testing into a report that will be sent to the client(s). Data entry will include assigning sample identity, ordering tests, review of results and finalizing test results. Set susceptibilities on known pathogens daily. This includes pathogens identified by this employee as well as pathogens identified and designated as needing susceptibilities by the other microbiologists. This should be done in a timely manner. If assistance is needed, requests need to be made to the other microbiologists as soon as possible so that results can be reported in a timely manner. Reading and interpreting the antimicrobic susceptibly testing for our clients is performed daily. Maintain QC stock culture by following the media quality control work instruction for regeneration and sub culturing. This includes setting up every lot/shipment of media with a positive and negative culture, interpreting and recording results. Any quality control failure will be reported to the laboratory supervisor immediately. Maintain cleanliness of the laboratory to allow efficient utilization fo space and equipment by maintaining an inventory of special media and to make sure all equipment is working properly to avoid any errors. Assist others in the lab in maintaining inventory by assisting in ordering supplies, which could include completing a purchase order and contacting various companies when necessary. To insure that all contaminated infections materials are appropriately treated so that the environment is safe for all personnel. Provide quality customer service, including assisting customers via phone, email and fax. Provide assistance with clients concerning test selection, collection procedures, interpretation and results. Perform quality assessment and quality control documentation needed for the laboratory to stay in compliance with regulations, assist in SOP updates, and correction actions. Assist the supervisor in conducting ongoing research projects in the general area of bacteriology. Various microbiological, immunological, and biochemical research techniques are used and the microbiologist must possess the capability and willingness to learn and adapt these to current or proposed research. Selected isolates from clinical specimens are checked to verify purity and stock culture are preserved for future research.
