This position is the lead on most jobs and is the project manager on all large and small jobs they are assigned to. They are also responsible for field leadership and the training, development, and mentoring of less experienced employees. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES The general duties listed herein identify the key responsibilities and expectations for performance. It cannot encompass all specific job tasks that the employee may be required to perform. The employee is required to follow any other job-related instructions and perform job-related duties as may be reasonably assigned by the Huntington Beach Service Manager. - This is a journeyman-level position and this boilermaker is expected to operate independently during field operations. This includes handling themselves in a safe and professional manner. - Customer care is our highest priority and is second only to safety. Speaking with the customers and coordinating with the shop the needs, limitations, and expectations of the customer is critical. - Must be able to pass the California Boiler R-Stamp certification test. We are a code-shop with an R-Stamp that allows us to repair pressure vessels. All boilermakers must be able to make repairs to pressure vessels that meet the standard that is required. - Troubleshooting a wide range of mechanical issues: this includes but is not limited to; leaks, pump failures, steam traps, condensate, carry-over, motors, etc. Must understand that we work on a wide variety of equipment and being familiar with how to diagnosis boiler system issues is key to our operation. - Installation of equipment: this includes; but is not limited to, boiler and systems installation, knowing how many different types of equipment are supposed to be installed, DA tanks, condensate tank, pumps, burners, gas regulators, steam headers, traps, etc. and all associated piping to connect these items into the system. - Our boilermakers are expected to be able to run a crew below them; as well as, be a part of someone else's crew. The ability to manage people and resources as well as plan a project and keep it on track is required. - Work as a team player with the other boilermakers as work and scheduling conflicts come up with after-hours work. It is expected and understood that there will be times when the boilermakers will have to take service calls and be scheduled to work outside of normal business hours even when they aren't on-call. - Manage projects from start to completion. This includes the following: - Conduct a safe and efficient job team and work site - Generate and order parts lists - Lay out work for team - Communicate with the customer, salesperson, service team, and management about the job status, change orders, completion percentage, budget goals, etc. - Complete each project in its entirety - Conduct job walks when necessary KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS - Advanced level of boiler system installation required and expected. - An advanced ability to read and understand a variety of piping diagrams. This includes understand the symbols and what they mean. The expectation is that with only a diagram the boilermaker can figure out and understand how the system is intended to be installed. - Advanced welding skills. This includes stick/arc welding. - Welding skills of different varieties are a plus, but not required (heliarc, mig and tig, wire feed, stainless steel, etc.) - Advanced mechanical skills, including but not limited to pipe fitting, welding, rigging, layout, job coordination. - Understanding that our customers run 24/7 and when their equipment breaks we are expected to respond. Our typical boilermakers will work an average of 45 hours a week and a lot of times are closer to 50 hours a week, with occasional weeks over 60 hours. - Willingness to be on-call. - Understanding that they are a resource for the lower level mechanics and be available for support when needed, both by phone and onsite. WORKING CONDITIONS Work environment. Working as a construction worker is physically strenuous work since workers carry heavy loads and often contort their bodies to access difficult to reach areas. Many Boilermakers work on roofs or other elevated platforms and often work in inclement weather. Many workers work in areas where they are exposed to dangerous chemicals, fumes, and noise that can cause ear damage. To prevent bodily harm, construction laborers must wear protective equipment. Workers must be extremely cautious, and follow all safety rules, when working on underground construction projects. Most workers do not work longer than 8-hour days, but often many are required to work longer hours to finish projects.
