The Methods section in the Design Bureau is responsible for ADA compliance, geometrics, automation and the Design manual / standards / details. The Design manual and standards are the primary resource for designers throughout the state and guide efficient, technology forward construction plans. Transportation Engineer Specialist This position serves as the Design Method's expert on design standards and details. Additionally, this position serves as a technical resource on safety hardware and updating roadside safety guidance. This requires working with in house designers, districts and consultants to review / update existing standards and create new standards / details. Standards are designed for uniform inclusion on all construction projects statewide and include detailed designs for all work types. The work requires advanced knowledge of many design areas including ADA compliance, geometric design, roadside safety, construction methods, and materials, so the incumbent must have a broad background and the ability to research and understand new subjects quickly. Responsibilities: Developing, checking, and/or reviewing standard designs for transportation projects, including Standard Road Plans, Design Detail Sheets, typicals, Tabulations, and Standard Notes. Review available research to ensure that the Department takes advantage of the latest advances in technology, materials, or construction techniques. Review guidance from American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) publications and other relevant manuals to ensure standard designs comply with national guidelines. Document all information so that design decisions are clearly justified. Utilize various computer-assisted design and drafting (CADD) aids including MicroStation, Connect, and AutoTurn and other programs including Excel to optimize design procedures. Involvement in technical committees and work groups to improve department specifications, processes and policies. Become a technical expert in safety systems and how to implement approved safety hardware in our transportation system. Additional Requirements Understanding of engineering principles in many areas including knowledge to evaluate ADA compliance, geometric design, roadside safety, construction methods, and materials. Specific knowledge of highway road design and construction methods. Knowledge and ability to use a computer is required. Effectively communicate with others, both verbally and in writing. Licenses A valid Drivers License must be possessed and maintained. Licensure by the Iowa Board of Engineering Examiners as a Professional Engineer. This licensure must be valid and in good standing at the time of hire and be maintained for employment. Shift: Monday through Friday, 7:45 AM - 4:30 PM. Hours may vary, and some overtime may be required. This position occasionally requires some overnight travel. Minimum Qualification Requirements Licensed as a professional engineer, and the equivalent of two years of full-time licensed professional transportation or related civil engineering experience. Must have, or prior to appointment, must obtain an active Iowa professional engineering license through the Iowa Professional Licensing Bureau - Engineering and Land Surveying Examination Board; OR a Masters degree in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, structural, or transportation engineering; engineering management; or an area closely related to transportation engineering may be substituted for one year of the required experience; OR employees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes experience equal to twelve months of full-time experience as a Transportation Engineer.
