Job Summary: The Hawaii Department of Education is seeking a high-achieving, qualified team player, who values and appreciates Deaf culture, hearing culture, and Hawaiian culture, to fill an essential vacancy at the Hawaii School for the Deaf and the Blind (HSDB) located in the Farrington-Kaiser-Kalani Complex Area (CA-FKK) of the Honolulu District. The function of the HSDB is to provide specialized instruction and to serve as a resource to the Deaf and Hard-of Hearing (D/HH) students and other schools across the State of Hawaii. This position will be responsible for the facilitation of communication for the Principal, Vice Principal, and District Educational Officers during the course of administrative meetings, legal and law enforcement situations, communications and conversations that occur spontaneously on a daily basis as well as for scheduled events in school, across the state, and in the community of high-risk settings. Minimum Qualification Requirements: Education: Graduation from an accredited 4-year college or university with a Bachelor's degree. Excess work experience as described under experience requirements below or any other responsible administrative, professional or analytical work experience which provided knowledge, skills and abilities comparable to those acquired in 4 years of successful study while completing a college or university curriculum leading to a baccalaureate degree may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. To be acceptable, the experience must have been of such scope, level and quality as to assure the possession of comparable knowledge, skills and abilities. The education or experience background must also demonstrate the ability to write clear and comprehensive reports and other documents; read and interpret complex written material; and solve complex problems logically and systematically. General Experience: One (1) year of responsible professional work experience which required a high degree of analytical skill. Such experience must have involved gathering, evaluating and analyzing facts and other pertinent information required to resolve problems and/or to determine and recommend appropriate courses of action; demonstrated the ability to elicit information orally and in writing; reading, comprehending, interpreting and evaluating technical subjects, analysis or proposals; and applying problem-solving methods and techniques, such as defining and analyzing problems, identifying alternative courses of action, using judgment in determining appropriate alternatives; and preparing clear and concise written reports and recommendations for action. Selective Certification Requirement: One (1) year of progressively responsible work experience in the application of interpreting or transliterating services to people who are D/HH, with experience in community and/or legal setting as well as mental health, law enforcement, and/or child protective related services should have involved at least one (1) year of interpretation in community for a full range of needs or interpreting for IEP meetings. The experience required for the class can be in any combination of work experience in professional-level interpreting as described above and may have been gained either concurrently or separately from the General Experience. Quality of Experience: Possession of the required number of years of experience will not in itself be accepted as proof of qualification for a position. The applicant's overall experience must have been of such scope and level of responsibility as to conclusively demonstrate that he/she has the ability to perform the duties of the position for which he/she is being considered. Certification Requirement: Proficiency in the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) level of 4.0 or higher, Hawaii Quality Assurance System (HQAS) 4 or higher, or Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) recognized national interpreter certification is required. License Requirement: Applicants must possess a current valid passenger-type motor vehicle operator's license to drive in the State of Hawaii.
