Job Description: ABOUT THERAPEUTIC FOSTER CARE The Therapeutic Foster Care program (TFC) provides safe, nurturing foster homes for children ages 6-18 who have been exposed to trauma and may be challenged with emotional, behavioral and psychiatric issues. Through the use of wraparound services and support, TFC assists children in foster care to achieve their goal of a permanent home. Foster families receive extensive training, care management support, and support group opportunities. Outpatient therapy, case management, on-call support and referrals to other clinical services are available for foster children. JOB SUMMARY The Therapeutic Support Staff (TSS) worker is responsible for providing one-on-one supportive services to youth in foster care with significant emotional and behavioral challenges. TSS workers may provide services in schools, in the youth's foster home or in the community. The TSS worker works in concert with the youth's teachers, parents/foster parents, care managers, and other team members to implement the youth's service plan and transfer skills to his/her primary caregivers. Interventions include the use of crisis intervention techniques, immediate behavioral reinforcements, emotional support, time structuring activities, and additional psychosocial rehabilitative activities as prescribed by the youths service plan. The TSS worker is responsible for providing gender specific, relational, trauma informed, strength- based, culturally competent interventions to ensure the safety and assist the youth in developing age-appropriate self-management skills and to facilitate development of therapeutic support skills in parents, family members or other adults responsible for supervising the child in an educational or other community setting. RESPONSIBILITIES Supports the emotional and social growth of youth by establishing limits, boundaries and encouraging healthy relationships, a sense of community, responsibility, and accountability for behavior based on each youths individual goals. Teaches youth life skills in preparation for a healthy and productive adjustment upon discharge. Provide behavioral support for youth in crisis Works with youths team to specify areas necessary for improvement as outlined in the youths plan, maintaining extensive communication with other team members including foster family, birth family (if appropriate), clinicians, etc. to help youth move towards permanency Participates in staff and departmental meetings, in-service training programs and attends meetings, workshops and conferences as required by the organization. Completes notes of youths progress toward treatment goals. Documents all incidents according to DCF and organizational requirements. Interpersonal Skills Demonstrates appropriate professional boundaries with youth, families and others. Adheres to the organizational code of ethics and standards for employee conduct. Demonstrates respect and courtesy at all times. Supervision and Judgment Responsible for knowledge of and adherence to organizational and program policies and procedures. Demonstrates proper judgment and decision making skills. Demonstrates ability to work independently in accordance with detailed instructions. Additional duties as assigned Experience and Skills: Bachelors degree in human services, which includes, but may not be limited to the following: social work, sociology, counseling, child welfare, psychology, marriage and family therapy, education, social services, criminal justice, child care management, child development, family studies OR Seven (7) years of paid experience working with children and youth. Must have a clean and valid drivers license, own a car for client transportation & motor vehicle insurance. Must have the ability to obtain a Therapeutic Crisis Intervention Certification and an American Red Cross First Aid and CPR Certified. 1-2 years experience working with psychiatric and behavioral disordered children/adolescents Individual must be at least 21 years of age. Training in Gender Specific, Trauma Informed, Strength Based, and Culturally Competent Behavior Models. Must be flexible able to work within home setting as well as community setting Good communication skills verbal and written. Skills such as strong conflict resolution, de-escalation techniques and crisis management PHYSICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS: Position may involve extensive standing, walking, etc. Position may require participation in sports or other physical activities. Physically able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodations, i.e. must be able to supervise groups of children and perform physical intervention if required; must be able to move freely from place to place without restriction.
